Understanding and Managing Tags in Connection Card Pro

Overview

Tags in Connection Card Pro are a powerful way to categorize, filter, and organize your Groups. Whether you’re labeling groups by demographic, purpose, or internal processes, tags help you quickly find what you need — and can enhance communication, reporting, and public-facing visibility.

This guide explains the different types of tags, how they’re used, and how admins can manage them.

What Are Tags?

Tags are labels you can attach to groups (and in other areas, such as events or people) to help with:

  • Searching and filtering
  • Organizing by demographics or purpose
  • Managing workflows
  • Creating public-facing filters for guests

Tag Types

There are multiple types of tags in Connection Card Pro. Each has its own purpose and visibility. The following four types are available for Groups.

Tag Type Visible To Use Case Examples
Public TagsEveryone (including public-facing pages)“Young Adults”, “Childcare Available”, “Women”
Custom TagsAdmins only“Needs Leader”, “Spanish Speaker”, “High Priority”
Project TagsAdmins only“Fall 2024 Launch”, “Sermon Archive Project”
Fundraiser TagsAdmins only“Youth Camp Fundraiser”, “Building Campaign”
Note: Tags do not affect group permissions. They are for organization, filtering, automation, and visibility only.

Tag Categories

Tags are grouped into categories — these are fully customizable and help you stay organized as your tag library grows.

For example, you might have categories like:

  • Stage of Life → “Youth”, “College”, “Adults”
  • Language → “English”, “Spanish”, “ASL”
  • Neighborhood → “North Side”, “Downtown”, “South Hill”
  • Purpose → “Discipleship”, “Outreach”, “Leadership”
  • Event / Semester → “Fall 2024”, “Winter 2025”

You can filter your group list by any of these categories. (See Document #2 – Using Group Lists for details.)

How to Add Tags to a Group

  1. Go to the group list for the type of group (e.g., Departments, Crews)
  2. Click the Edit icon or open the group’s Primary View, then click Edit
  3. Scroll to the Tags section
  4. Select tags from the dropdown for each category
  5. Click Save
You can add multiple tags across multiple categories to a single group.

How Tags Help You Find Groups

Once tags are applied, you can:

  • Filter group lists by tag or tag category
  • Search group lists using keywords (e.g., part of the tag name)
  • Use Tag Binders to view everything tied to a specific tag (see Document #6)

Admins can also use tags to power automations and reporting across the system.

How to Create and Manage Tags (Admins Only)

Tags and tag categories are created in the Group Settings section (accessible from the gear icon or Admin settings menu).

From here, you can:

  • Add or remove tag categories
  • Define which tag types (Public, Custom, etc.) each category uses
  • Add, rename, or delete individual tags
  • Set display order
  • Control whether a tag is used across Groups, Events, or both
Best Practice: Use consistent naming and capitalize tag names to keep lists clean.

Tag Visibility & Security

Public Tags may appear on:

  • Public group signup pages
  • Embedded group directories
  • Event listings (if enabled)

Custom, Project, and Fundraiser Tags are always hidden from the public and non-admin users.

Pro Tips

  • Use Public Tags to help guests find relevant groups (e.g., “Young Adults”, “Childcare Available”)
  • Use Custom Tags for internal admin purposes (e.g., “Needs Leader”, “Volunteer Training Complete”)
  • Combine tags with Group Types + Filtering for targeted organization
  • Create categories like “Semester” or “Stream” to manage rotating classes or sessions
