Households & Family Connections in the Member Directory

How Households and Family Ties Affect Directory Visibility in the Personal Hub

Connection Card Pro’s Member Directory in the Personal Hub is more than a list of names — it intelligently organizes people by household and family, so members can easily find those they’re connected to.

This guide explains how the directory works, what determines who appears, and how your admin setup behind the scenes influences what members see.

How the Directory Groups People

The directory can be displayed two ways:

  • By Individual
  • By Family (grouped view)

👀 Both views show the same people, but the "Family" view smartly organizes them into household groups where appropriate.

“Family View” = Smart Grouping

Despite being labeled “Family”, the grouped directory view is primarily based on:

  1. Household membership
  2. Family relationships (where available)

This allows blended families, grandparents, and others to be shown together when appropriate — even if they don’t all share the same last name.

🧠 In the backend, this uses household structure with an overlay of family relationships to form a “smart family” for display purposes.

Who Is Shown as the Parent?

  • The Primary Contact of the household is shown as the parent
  • If linked to a spouse or partner, both are shown together as the “parents” of the household
  • Children are shown underneath, if:
    • They are linked via a “child” relationship
    • They are part of the same household
👥 If another adult lives in the household but isn’t connected to the Primary Contact (or spouse) via family link, they will appear separately in the grouped directory — as their own family unit.

Example

Household:
  • Jane (Primary Contact, mom)
  • Mark (dad, family-linked as spouse)
  • Ella (child, linked via family, same household)
  • Grandma Ruth (in same household but not family-linked)
What shows in “Family View” directory:
  • Jane & Mark as “parents”
  • Ella listed beneath them
  • Ruth appears as a separate entry

What If Someone Isn’t in a Household?

People who are not assigned to a household:

  • Still appear in the directory (if allowed by visibility settings)
  • Are shown as individuals in both views

⚠️ Admin Tips

  • Linking a family member is not enough to group them in the directory — they must also be in the same household
  • Use Primary Contact + spouse/partner to define the “parents” shown
  • Avoid over-linking people who don’t need to appear grouped
  • Always use clear and appropriate relationship types

✅ Best Practice Summary

  • The “Family” view is based primarily on household, not just family ties
  • Always assign a Primary Contact for every household
  • Link children using the child relationship to ensure correct display
  • If someone appears alone, check if they are in the correct household and have proper family connections
