Label Printer Guide

Helping you choose the best label printer and workflow for your check-in stations.

Connection Card Pro supports Dymo and Brother label printers in different capacities. Due to different manufacturer support for third-party software, the differences can be confusing. We've put together this guide to help you understand how and where each printer is supported and how to best set up your check-in system.

Unlike other check-in systems, Connection Card Pro is able to support both Dymo and Brother label printers in both our web-based and iPad check-in systems. However, there are some workarounds required when mixing and matching.

This means that you can easily use a mix of iPads, desktops, or laptops with both Dymo and Brother label printers in your check-in workflow. However, if your budget and planning allows for it, we certainly recommend choosing one of the following two schemes.

PC / Mac Check-in on Desktop / Laptops / Windows Tablets

If you are using primarily desktop, laptop or Windows tablets (such as the Microsoft Surface) for your check-in stations, we recommend using Dymo printers.

Dymo LabelWriter 450 / 550 series printers will connect directly to the device you're using via USB. Or, the Dymo LabelWriter Wireless will be connected to the same WiFi network as the check-in device you're using and may be installed on multiple computers.

If you are using two or three check-in stations, with desktops, laptops, or Surface tablets, you may connect a Dymo printer directly to each device, or you may set up one device to run the easy Connection Card Pro print server and allow all check-in devices (including iPads) to print labels to a single or handful of label printers through the print server.

iPad Check-in with Brother Printers

If you are using primarily iPads for your check-in stations, we recommend using the Brother QL-810Wc or QL-820NWBc printers.

The Brother label printers will connect to your Local Area Network (LAN) using WiFi or the Ethernet connection. iPads running Connection Card Pro's Check-in Kiosk App can connect via WiFi to any Brother label printers on the same network. We do not support Bluetooth at this time, but as long as your WiFi network is properly set up, WiFi offers a much greater range for connectivity.

If you are also using PC/Mac devices for check-in, our Check-in Kiosk App automatically acts as a print server and can pass-thru labels to Brother printers, allowing you to share Brother printers across all check-in devices, whether PC, Mac, or iPad.

Recommended Setting: On the Brother printers, we recommend setting it up to use Infrastructure Mode for the wireless connection.

Mixing and Matching Devices

iPads (using Check-in Kiosk) or iPads / Android tablets using our web-based interface can still print to Dymo label printers. However, your check-in workflow will require at least one desktop or laptop connected to the Dymo printer (either Wirelessly or through USB) and running the Connection Card Pro print server. This is especially easy to setup if you have multiple self check-in stations with iPads, but also use a Windows/Mac desktop at a service counter where volunteers or leaders can register new guests.

In this case, we recommend attaching a Dymo 450/550 series printer directly to the service counter computer. Additionally, you could support multiple Dymo LabelWriter Wireless printers next to each iPad by installing those printers on the Service Counter computer and using the Connection Card Pro print server.

Windows/Mac based desktops / laptops / tablets using our web-based interface can still print to Brother label printers. However, your check-in workflow will require at least one iPad for each Brother label printer. The Check-in Kiosk App will automatically act as a print server. This can enable you to have multiple check-in stations, using a mix of iPads and computers, with many of them sharing a limited number of Brother label printers.

Additional Uses for Dymo Label Printers

In addition to Check-in, Connection Card Pro also supports printing address labels to a Dymo label printer directly from a person's profile or from the person list! In this case, the Dymo label printer must be directly connected to (or a wireless label printer installed on) the device you are using to select the name and print labels from. Please note that printing address labels from Connection Card Pro does not support Brother label printers and does not utilize the print server.

If you occasionally send physical mail to individuals in your church and would like a quick way to print address labels, we recommend connecting a Dymo 450 / 550 series label printer (or Dymo Wireless) to the computer or laptop you use most often when managing contacts.
